n every business class, entrepuerner how-to guide, and photography course, one of the very first things they want you to do is to find your WHY. My answers typically range from “because I am passionate about photography” to “I want to create beautiful images”. And these are all accurate, but to be honest none of them have ever felt like my actual why. In my current business course, the first homework assignment was not just find you're why. It was find your why behind your why. *insert eye-roll here* I had no idea where I was going to find the why behind my why, because I didn’t really even know where my why was. So how in the world was I supposed to look behind it and dive deeper. Well, in true God fashion (who I typically limit and put in a box), he steps in and later that same afternoon he gives me not only my why, but the why behind my why…

I absolutely love journaling. Always have. From a very young age, I found that writing out my thoughts really helped sort out my chaotic brain and overzealous emotions. In recent years, I have begun writing a letter to myself reflecting over the past year. I began last year sharing an excerpt of my letter with you all.

Everyone was smiling ear to ear as she walked down the aisle. They smiled because of the sign the Ring Bearer had carried down the aisle just a minute before. (See below) They smiled because the flower girls were probably the cutest thing they had seen. They smiled because they saw the nervous glances that Ashley and Aaron exchanged.

All day her eyes had been dry. She had fought not to cry as her dad walked her down the aisle and when her very soon to be husband teared up during the vows. And she thought she had made it. Then came the daddy daughter dance. The dance where you are being held by the arms of the man who held you and loved you before you could ever walk or talk. As Jasmine and her Dad started to dance, the tears began to flow.

“Savannah, we not only want you to take pictures, but we also want you to enjoy our day, too.” Jessica said as we were finishing dinner and our conversation of the details of their upcoming fall wedding. That day in January wouldn't be the last time I would hear her say that either. Over the course of the next eight months, I would be reminded again and again that I was to have fun as well. When I was young, I was absolutely obsessed with horses. I mean obsessed. I had horse border in the walls in the bedroom I shared with my sister. (Sorry, Taylor.) I had a largely oversized stuffed horse that I used as a pillow for many years (too many years). Horse toys, clothing, bedding, etc. I had it all. We even had two pet horses, Beauty and Star, that I would whisper my secrets to and just sit and watch run. As I grew up and became busier with sports, school, and becoming a teenager, my obsession faded. However, I still really love the beauty and the grace that horses are known for. I still love the feel of their velvet-like noses under my hand and the warmth you feel when you lay your head against their neck. My obsession, though faded, is still very present.

One of my main goals in my business is to be sure my work is loving on people and become more like friends than acquaintances by the end of our session. When I was getting ready for Mark + Sheila's session, I was honestly a little nervous, because I knew absolutely nothing about them. They got out to the farm and I asked a little bit about them. When they both said they worked in the Science/Biology field, I let out a breath of relief.

I met Ashley back at the beginning of this year over lunch. It was one of those lunches where you just didn't want it to end. I could have listened to Ashley talk about Aaron for hours. Every time she said referred to him, her eyes would glow. When she recounted their first date, she couldn't stop smiling. By the end of lunch, I couldn't wait to meet Aaron.

Everything was swirling around her. Her family and friends were pampering, loving, and making sure everything was perfect. Renee, however, was centered and calm.
