Preparation 101: 7 Tips To Prepare For Your Portrait Session

I do not know about you guys, but I hate being unprepared. I am the girl who packs 10 different outfits for a three-day trip. This is a judgement free zone, people....I mean, come on, if the temperature drops on the first day of summer, don't tell me you will not be glad I packed that second sweatshirt for you to borrow.  My point is that I really like to be prepared for the unknown. Whether you are like me or not, I do know that I get questions all of the time from my clients about how to prepare for their session with me. So, I am going give you some basic tips that will help ensure that you are ready for your portrait session.

When it comes to getting dressed for a shoot, it can be pretty stressful. So, I make sure that when you book with me that you receive my style guide that goes into great detail on... well the details. However, I do want to share a few basic tips that will assist you in getting ready for your next session!

7 Tips to Prepare for your Portrait Session

Hair- If you plan to have your hair trimmed or cut before your session, try to schedule it a couple of weeks in advance. Just to be on the safe side. Side note: a portrait session is always a REALLY good excuse to have your hair styled by a professional and who doesn't want pampered for a day. Also, men should trim their facial hair to provide a nice clean look. If you prefer to be clean shaven, be sure to use moisturizer to help with possible irritated skin.

Tan- Avoid tan lines or if you are like me, burn lines before your shoot. Also, if you plan to get a spray tan, do so a few days before to allow time for the tan to fade into your natural skin complexion.

Nails- Men and women should be sure to take note of their nails. Be sure they are clean and trim. If women have their nails painted, it is always a good idea to go with a neutral color and apply a fresh coat the day of the session. Like with your hair, a portrait session is a good excuse to splurge for a manicure and/or pedicure. I'm just saying.

Coordination, Coordination, Coordination- If you are in a group or family session, try to avoid matching others in your group. You want to coordinate, but not match. For example, choose three or four different colors and work with those colors only. Also, each individual does not have to have all three of those colors, maybe just one or two.

Clothing- Try your best to avoid billowy, large clothing. While they may be flattering in person, they will not be slimming in camera. This goes for all body types. Choose outfits that will hug your curves, especially waist, hips, arms, and chest.

Distractions- Avoid logos, prints, wrinkles, and large patterns as well as loud, vibrant colors. Also, make sure your clothing does not reveal any undergarments. All of these will distract from your beautiful, smiling face, which, of course, is the focus of our session.

Accessories-  I absolutely love accessories (hats, jewelry, scarfs, etc.) Just be sure that all accessories including shoes and socks coordinate with your outfit. This will assist in completing the full outfit as well as the photograph!

Well, there you have it! A few simple tips to help relieve stress and make sure your photographs are exactly what you want!
